“I don’t think it’s an exaggeration to say this program has saved my life. I’ve been overweight my entire adulthood and have struggled with emotional eating and an unhealthy relationship with food. At my heaviest, I was 260 pounds. I’ve tried popular diet programs many times (Weight Watchers, South Beach, Atkins, you name it) and I’d lose some weight, but gain it all back, sometimes more. I used to say I felt like a skinny girl trapped in a fat chick’s body.
In February 2016, I was diagnosed with Type II Diabetes and if I’m being honest, I wasn’t surprised. I’d been showing symptoms and suspected for a while that I had it; I had avoided my blood tests because I knew what they would show. Jill recommended me for the Body and Wellness Program and I was hesitant that it would work – nothing else had – but figured it couldn’t hurt to try. I attended your orientation and decided that day to commit 100%. I wasn’t sure how I would be able to avoid my favorite, sugary, carb-laden foods but I knew something had to change.
I scoured the internet for low carb recipes and started cooking every day for every meal. I discovered you can make some amazing things with cauliflower, and almond and coconut flours with stevia can create desserts that my family and friends can’t believe are sugar-free.
Almost immediately, I started to feel better. I had more energy, I slept better at night, I wasn’t sick all the time, and the migraine headaches I was accustomed to stopped completely. The constant cravings for sugary and carb-heavy foods went away. After only three months on the program, my blood sugar and a1c levels dropped drastically.
Now, a little over a year later, I’ve lost 75 pounds and 40 inches, over 30% of my starting weight. I’m one pound away from my starting goal of 150. I’ve gone from a size 24 to a size 10/12. Family, friends and neighbors I haven’t seen in a while don’t recognize me. I did not have a single cold this winter; in the past, I’d be sick every few weeks. Several of my friends have started making changes to their eating habits and cite me as their inspiration. I’ve been participating in fitness challenges with my friends and I do yoga every day. I’m suddenly the go-to person for advice about food.
Other parts of my life have also fallen into place. I have more confidence and I’m happier. I got the courage to change other things I wasn’t happy with. Quite simply, I’m not “stuck” anymore.
I could not have done it without the support of the BW Primary Care staff. Leanne, Jill, and Dr. Weisenberger have been my biggest cheerleaders and I look forward to checking in with them every two weeks. Everyone from the front desk staff to the medical assistants are friendly and encouraging and I brag all the time about how much I love my doctor’s office.

“I turned 40, looked in the mirror and wondered where “I” had gone. I ran a half marathon a couple years earlier….I had been a “gym rat” for 9 years, working out 5-6 times a week. But then life happened. I went back to work, didn’t make time for the gym or running, and in general gave up on eating healthy. Then a wake-up call came. I came into the office after a blood pressure reading of 210/114. I started on one med, then another, then another and finally got it under control….with THREE medications. Even if I didn’t have a great number on the scale, the providers are there with you, pointing out the positives and helping tweak the negatives. That keeps you successful from week-to-week.
