High Intensity Laser Therapy
*Pain-Relief
*Non-Invasive
*Drug Free
What is H.I.L.T.?
It is a non-invasive, drug-free approach that treats the underlying cause of pain by actually repairing damaged cells. The Phoenix Thera-Lase Laser used at our office is a Class IV therapeutic laser which is the latest generation of High Intensity Laser Therapy (HILT) equipment. These safe lasers more deeply penetrate into cellular tissue and surrounding tissue to provide longer-lasting results, enabling healing at a significantly higher rate. The bio-stimulation of cells in muscles, tissues and ligaments works to treat acute and chronic conditions of the soft tissues, neck, back, extremities and joints.
It is the most powerful therapeutic laser on the market and is a highly effective alternative to traditional therapies such as cortisone injections and many surgeries.

How does High Intensity Laser Therapy (HILT) work?
The laser is applied to the surface of a treatment area using a handheld applicator called a diode. The laser light (photons) penetrates through the skin, deep into tissue and into the damaged cells. Laser therapy does not affect healthy cells.
It accelerates repair by:
- Stimulating ATP production via mitochondria
- Increasing collagen synthesis
- Increasing the levels of beta endorphins and serotonin
- Increasing DNA and RNA synthesis
Which results in:
- Accelerates the healing process
- Provides pain relief
- Increases range of motion
- Reduces inflammation
- Stimulates tissue regeneration
- Improves vascular activity
- Reduces fibrous tissue formation
- Improves nerve function
- Softens scar tissue
Common Treated Conditions:
- Bursitis
- Carpal tunnel syndrome
- Cervical (neck) pain
- DJD (degenerative joint disease)
- Fibromyalgia
- Herniated disc/bulging disc
- Lumbar (low back) pain
- Neuropathy/Neuralgia
- Knee pain and swelling
- Osteoarthritis of various sites
- Plantar fasciitis
- Piriformis syndrome
- Post surgery healing
- Restricted ROM (range of motion)/stiffness
- Rheumatoid arthritis
- Sciatica
- Sinus congestion
- Strains/Sprains
- Shoulder pain
- Tendonitis
- Tennis elbow/Golfer’s elbow
How many sessions will I need?
The amount of treatment sessions vary depending on the type of condition, the severity of the condition and the person. Some people receive therapeutic benefit from just one treatment. Many acute conditions may take from 2-6 treatments while more severe (and chronic) conditions may require up to 8 -12 sessions. Chronic conditions may have an initial treatment phase and afterwards may require 1-2 follow-up sessions per month.
Are there any side effects?
Laser therapy has been used for over forty years. Almost no side effects have been reported aside from occasional pain symptoms or aggravation of old injuries for the first few days as the healing response becomes more active. The Phoenix Thera-lase HILT beam isn’t significantly absorbed by melanin, hemoglobin, or oxyhemoglobin. The beam profile is diffused and it is distanced from the skin, thereby you receive deeper penetration, over a larger area while preventing any damage.
Although contraindications are minimal, HILT is not recommended for certain people. These patients include, but are not limited to, pregnant women and patients with cancer. Treatment over active cancer may increase the rate of tumor growth. Areas other than a cancer site may still be addressed.
What can I expect during the treatment?
During treatment, the diode will be held over the treatment area. There is no pain during treatment–you will feel a warm and soothing sensation – and constant feedback is requested between you and the technician. Sessions will take 10-15 minutes per area, depending on the person. Patients can return to work under proper care instructions during the healing period.
How do I prepare for a laser session?
Patients should wear comfortable clothes that will make it easy for the laser technician to reach the treatment area. Otherwise, we will provide a gown for you to change into. You must remove all jewelry, watches, phones–any and all items that may reflect light. Visible and invisible wavelengths of HILT can cause permanent eye damage without the proper protective eye wear and precautions – you will be provided special goggles made to block the specific wavelength of our laser.
Is H.I.L.T. treatment covered under my insurance?
Like LASIK eye surgery, laser hair removal and laser fungal treatments, HILT is not covered under medical insurance despite the broad use and effectiveness of all these different laser therapies. However, we have tried to make the treatments affordable.
